Residential/commercial buildings Competition
The competition design “Drei bunte Vögel” (“Three colourful birds”) by schneider+schumacher Vienna is conceived as a sustainably designed residential neighbourhood for Seestadt Aspern in Vienna’s 22nd district. Three polygonal structures pivot around a green hub – a diversely designed, landscaped inner courtyard that provides a space where all generations can get together. The three architecturally distinctive blocks have finely differentiated façades and wraparound balconies, an angled self-shading thermal envelope, and generous amounts of glazing. The concept combines living, working, and leisure in a way that is not only sustainable, but inclusive, and community-oriented too.
The design comprises around 98 flats, more than half of which are affordable SMART flats, plus 15 spaces for commerce. A range of flat types ensures a mixed community of residents. At ground floor level, public and communal facilities contribute to the revitalisation of the neighbourhood. The concept is complemented by assisted living facilities, a communal lounge area, a co-working space, urban gardening, a space where pets can meet, plus a skate park.
In terms of environmental sustainability, the design sets new standards. A combination of a straw-insulated modular and demountable timber structural components, access cores that are naturally ventilated via air pumps, plus photovoltaic panels and thermally activated building components all contribute towards minimising energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. Climate-resilient greening, rainwater management based on the so-called “sponge city concept”, and a variety of open spaces act together to underpin the microclimate and promote biodiversity.
