Green Centre FRANKLIN
Mannheim, 2021
Ongoing project
Residential/commercial buildings MVRDV
The “Grüne Mitte” will form the centrepiece of Mannheim’s new FRANKLIN district. With its architecturally striking design – a green, walkable hill – the building will serve as the neighbourhood’s central meeting place and focal point, featuring retail outlets and residential units. The design is by the renowned Rotterdam-based architectural firm MVRDV, whose designs also give the neighbourhood its character in other areas. schneider+schumacher, in cooperation with bb22, is responsible for the detailed design of this iconic landmark in service phase 5.
The project is being realised by FRANKLIN Grüne Mitte GmbH (FGM), a company of the GBG Unternehmensgruppe GmbH, and the Mannheim-based project developer 3iPro. The joint venture of Implenia Hochbau GmbH and Diringer & Scheidel GmbH & Co. KG is acting as general contractor and client.
At the very top of the green hill, FRANKLIN Grüne Mitte GmbH is constructing a residential building comprising 34 rental flats. The ground floor of the hill will house a supermarket with a retail area of around 1,500 square metres, a bakery, a pharmacy, a chemist’s and a restaurant; a bank branch is also planned. The upper floors are intended for office use. The green roof of the hill will form part of the future Benjamin Franklin Square, with the area largely open to the public. The public building complex is bisected by the Europa-Achse, which runs through FRANKLIN as a central thoroughfare.
