Living near Vienna Nordwestbahnhof

Vienna, 2024
Residential buildings
Competition 3rd prize

A new district is set to be developed on the site of the former Nordwestbahnhof in Vienna by 2035, combining inner-city living and working with leisure facilities. In a competition organised by the City of Vienna / Wiener Wohnen for a new social housing development, the design by schneider+schumacher Wien came third. The major challenge was to create a socially and environmentally sustainable place to live and a high-quality residential environment.

The design features a robust perimeter block divided into four distinct sections, whose undulating, angled courtyard façade frames the spacious communal garden and keeps it free from underground development. “The project impresses with its large, contiguous open space, which is kept free by the dense building mass along the streets. Particular praise was given to the entrance areas, which integrate well with the open-space design,” the jury stated.

The design features a green façade and a densely planted communal garden. Furthermore, the delicate height variation of the seven-storey building creates projections for planters every two storeys. The ground floor offers premises for commercial use and internal communal areas along the streets – the upper storeys are predominantly occupied by small flats. Great importance was attached to ensuring good lighting and sunlight for these flats.
