Zechwald Site

Lindau, 2025 Ongoing project
Urban design
Competition 1st prize

The competition for the future of the Zechwald site in Lindau – organised by Rhomberg Bau – focused on the development of a new district centre that combines living, working and social infrastructure in a climate-adapted overall concept. The work of schneider+schumacher Städtebau GmbH with Carlo Lo Landschaftsarchitektur, ‘Living and Working in Zechwald’, was awarded first prize.

To transform the formerly commercial site into an urban quarter, schneider+schumacher opted for an urban structure based on relaxed courtyard typologies. The buildings frame semi-public inner courtyards, but remain open and permeable. The concept focuses on internal access via communal courtyards, while the private open spaces – in particular tenant gardens and terraces – are consistently oriented towards the landscaped green space outside. The development also follows this principle. The approximately 300 apartments are accessed via open pergolas and central stairwells, some of which are connected by bridges. The buildings are designed as hybrid timber constructions with prefabricated timber elements for the façades.
