Instituto Cervantes (former Amerika Haus)

Frankfurt, 2007 - 2008
Cultural buildings, Schools/educational facilities, Listed buildings

The legendary Amerika Haus greatly helped to promote the American way of life during the era of the newly forming German post-war society. The architects of this cultural movement which emerged shortly after the war, were Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in collaboration with the Frankfurt architect Otto Apel. The continuity of the building’s history was the main focus in schneider+schumacher’s careful refurbishment. In 2008 the building was handed over to the Spanish Cultural Institute Cervantes. For this purpose a new folding screen (Spanish Wall) was designed in order to combine both functionality and a pictorial character.
