The design by dichter architektur, which won first prize in the 2016 architectural competition, was overseen during its implementation by schneider+schumacher Bau- und Projektmanagement mbH. The two buildings – the newly planned seminar building for Philipps University of Marburg and the research building for the German Documentation Centre for Art History (DDK) – form a transition between Marburg’s Botanical Garden and the old town.

The research building comprises a floor area of 2,500 square metres, spread over four storeys and tailored to the needs of the Documentation Centre. Of this, over 800 square metres are designated for archival purposes. The eight seminar rooms in the university building are equipped with state-of-the-art technology and can accommodate up to 100 students. The total usable floor area of the four-storey building is 1,250 square metres.

The seminar building stands out due to its black brickwork, which contrasts in colour with the white laboratory building. The filter walls integrated into both façades provide users with privacy even on the ground floors. The extensive glazing ensures a bright indoor environment in all rooms of the buildings. The open spaces on the site are designed in keeping with the adjacent Botanical Garden.
