Dream houses - Interior design
Karlsruhe, 2021 - 2025
Residential buildings Competition first prize
The design for multi-family houses on the Hoepfner site in Karlsruhe comprises three individual blocks located in a wooded park and oriented around a common courtyard. They offer almost 50 rental flats, have a shared underground car park and have been dubbed “dream houses“.
Sustainable materials were used for the structure, façade and interior finishes: the flats were constructed using solid timber, largely prefabricated off-site, and erected on the solid concrete base of the underground car park – the stairwell and lift shaft are also made of concrete. The materiality of the surfaces, with exposed concrete in the stairwell and wooden shingles on the façade, is consistently derived from the structure itself.
The varied façade design, featuring protruding balconies and greenery with wild hops, makes the three building blocks appear less imposing. The variation in building heights, ranging from two to five storeys, also lends the composition a sense of lightness. A communal room and garden areas accessible to all residents form part of the apartments’ design.
