Bus terminal roofing

Frankfurt am Main, 2015 - 2023
Transport infrastructure buildings

The roof designed by schneider+schumacher for CA Immo for the Frankfurt bus terminal covers an area of almost 1,000 square metres and covers ten of the 14 bus stops at the long-distance bus terminal built by Kaufmann Bausysteme. Travellers and those waiting see a faceted roof soffit with a glazed wooden surface, which creates a cosy atmosphere. From a bird’s eye view, the 68.80-metre-long and 11.60-metre-wide roof is greened, stores rainwater and thus counteracts overheating in the urban space.

The roof consists of a sustainable, parallelogram-based wooden structure made of cross-laminated timber elements supported by precast spun concrete columns. The 22 elements, formed from inverted ‘umbrellas’, create a multifaceted structure of surfaces and edges. Four spotlights are attached to each column in a ring shape, emphasising the complexity of the geometric structure after dark.

The bus terminal is located south of the main railway station – right next to two other projects by schneider+schumacher: the Frankfurt Station Hotel and the Parking Garage.
