According to Michael Schumacher, three guiding principles were paramount: to integrate the new building into the existing urban fabric; to offer its users maximum freedom; and to create a landmark building, recognizable in the expression of curiosity and cooperation. As Michael describes in his video talk, these three concepts formed the basis for schneider+schumacher’s design for the Shenfang Park research and development building.
The building is currently under construction in Shenzhen, China. The block structure steps down towards the riverbank to offer the occupants views of the Hong Kong wetlands area opposite. The building layout has offices facing outwards and laboratories facing inwards. In the centre an axially organised landscape, designed for leisure activities, aims to encourage informal encounters.
