Modular timber housing for Karlsruhe Waldstadt

26.06.2020 - Notes

schneider+schumacher has been awarded a contract to build a new residential development for Karlsruhe Waldstadt, in a competition organised by Volkswohnung GmbH. Having garnered one of two first prizes in the competition in February, the design was then revised in line with the jury’s recommendations. In a subsequent competition stage, and with further revision, schneider+schumacher – together with Carla Lo landscape architects – were able to sway the jury in favour of their design.

schneider+schumacher’s design arranges two five-storey residential terraces opposite each other on a site, which as a result will become more densely populated. These blocks are angled on site to clearly differentiate the various public, communal and private spaces, while the large inner courtyard between the buildings has a forest-like organic design to create a peaceful atmosphere. All 134 apartments – a mix of 1 to 5-room units, with floor areas ranging between 45 and 105 square metres – have balconies or, on the ground floor, terraces with small gardens. The complex offers 270 bicycle parking spaces and 137 underground parking spaces. The residential terraces are based on a modular construction method using sustainable timber.
