Laying the foundation stone at Plan International

23.06.2017 - Notes

A foundation stone laying ceremony took place yesterday, marking the start of a new project for the children’s charity Plan International. The building will be located directly opposite the ‘Philanthropy House’ housing the Foundation’s headquarters, which opened in 2013. The new building by schneider+schumacher is dedicated to Plan International’s movement “Because I am a Girl“ – the organisation’s campaign that fights for equal opportunities for girls and young women across the globe. It is due for completion at the end of 2018.

City Mayor Olaf Scholz and the actress Senta Berger, president of the campaign “Because I am a Girl”, attended the ceremony, where a time capsule containing a manifesto on equal rights for girls and young women was incorporated in the building’s foundations.

The new building is situated on a prominent urban corner site at Bramfelder Strasse and Drosselstrasse, which will be further emphasised by the rounded off shape of the building. According to the architect Michael Schumacher, “The Philanthropy House and the new building will be like brother and sister – each functions autonomously, each has its own focus and yet jointly they create an entity.”

In addition to flexible layouts for offices and meeting rooms, the building offers a commercial space on the ground floor with an inviting, transparent entrance off the street, where a Plan-Shop will sell items that were hitherto only available online.
