Making Heimat

23.02.2017 - Lectures

An exhibition entitled "Making Heimat. Germany, Arrival Country" is on view at the DAM from 4 March until 10 September 2017. The exhibition, originally shown in the German Pavilion at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale, has now been updated and augmented to include further topics. DAM points out that the current refugee situation plus the demands placed on urban arrival districts have combined to create a defining moment: a housing crisis in Germany. The exhibition therefore presents not only housing for migrants, but also some current housing projects in various German cities that point the way towards affordable housing for all. In this context, a low-cost pilot housing project in Frankfurt-Oberrad, jointly conceived by schneider+schumacher and ABG Frankfurt Holding, has been selected. The aim is to achieve apartments with a basic rent of less than 10 Euros per square metre. The exhibition responds to the situation in 2015, when German borders were kept open to allow almost 900,000 migrants to enter the country, and it encourages people to reflect on Germany as an open country of immigration.
