Europe-wide call for tenders for the construction of FAIR

29.09.2016 - Exhibitions

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has released around €200 million to fund construction work for the implementation of the FAIR facility. This allows FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe) and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research to begin sending out tenders for specific contracts – for example the construction of the approximately 1.1 km-long underground ring accelerator tunnel.

The initial excavation and shoring up works recently went out to OJEU tender. Provided the tendering process goes smoothly, construction work will begin in mid-2017. The planning and realisation of the research facility is being undertaken by Arbeitsgemeinschaft ion42, which comprises the architectural offices of DGI Bauwerk and schneider+schumacher.

The project is being presented at booth C1 331 at the EXPO REAL in Munich, 4 – 6 October. By participating at the trade fair, FAIR hopes to engender dialogue with the building industry, since potential contractors will have the opportunity to inform themselves in detail about what is planned, and express an interest in participating in the project.

On the first day of the trade fair, the project experts went into the details of the scheme in a panel discussion (see photo, from left to right): Kai Otto, Director Arge ion42; Uwe Kreische, Head of FAIR construction project management; Jörg Blaurock, Technical Managing Director FAIR and GSI; Professor Laura Fabbietti, FAIR Researcher, and Klaus Ringsleben, Chair FAIR Building Advisory Committee.
