Europe-wide call for tenders for the construction of FAIR

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) has released around €200 million to fund construction work for the implementation of the FAIR facility. This allows FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research in Europe) and the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research to begin sending out tenders for specific contracts – for example the construction of the approximately 1.1 km-long underground ring accelerator tunnel.

The initial excavation and shoring up works recently went out to OJEU tender. Provided the tendering process goes smoothly, construction work will begin in mid-2017. The planning and realisation of the research facility is being undertaken by Arbeitsgemeinschaft ion42, which comprises the architectural offices of DGI Bauwerk and schneider+schumacher.

The project is being presented at booth C1 331 at the EXPO REAL in Munich, 4 – 6 October. By participating at the trade fair, FAIR hopes to engender dialogue with the building industry, since potential contractors will have the opportunity to inform themselves in detail about what is planned, and express an interest in participating in the project.
