Franklin Green Center

20.10.2026 - Notes

In mid-September, the heart of the new Mannheim district of Franklin was officially opened. The Grüne Mitte (Green Centre) forms an accessible, green hub for the district while also providing homes and workplaces as well as a local neighbourhood shopping centre.

The design comes from MVRDV, an architecture practice based in Rotterdam. schneider+schumacher, in cooperation with bb22, took on the execution planning (Leistungsphase 5) for this identity-defining landmark.

GBG developed the Grüne Mitte district centre together with the Mannheim project developer 3iPro. The building takes the form of a green hill that can be accessed from outside via several flights of steps. On top of the hill sits a residential building, a reminiscence of the historic development on Franklin. Here, GBG offers 34 rental apartments in various sizes. At the highest point, 20 metres above ground, there is also a viewing platform.

On the ground floor of the hill are a Wasgau local supermarket with an associated bakery, a Rossmann drugstore, a pharmacy and a terminal for VR Bank Rhein-Neckar. A food and beverage offering will follow.
