In early September, the exhibition ‘Form Follows Beam: Architecture for a Particle Accelerator’ opened at the Architektur Galerie Berlin. Until 10 October 2026, the exhibition will showcase the construction of the mega-research facility through photographs, models and multimedia content.
Gallery director Ulrich Müller welcomed the numerous guests at the exhibition opening. Dr Ingo Peter, Head of Press and Public Relations at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, explained the scientific significance of the project: “FAIR is creating a unique research infrastructure: an underground ring accelerator with a circumference of 1,100 metres, storage rings and experimental stations. Here, researchers can simulate the universe in the laboratory through unprecedented experiments. But it is not only the research that is unique – the architecture is too. That is precisely why we are here today, to show how science and design form an exciting and unique union.”
Bernd Tibes from DGI Bauwerk and Kai Otto from schneider+schumacher provided an insight into the challenge of planning a project of this scale and explained how the two firms joined forces to form the ‘Arge ion42’ consortium.
