Exhibition opening at the Architektur Galerie Berlin

DGI Bauwerk and schneider+schumacher invite you to the exhibition ‘Form Follows Beam. Architecture for a Particle Accelerator’ at the Architekturgalerie Berlin.

As the ion42 consortium, the two architectural practices are designing and constructing the FAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research) research facility – one of the world’s most complex construction projects for cutting-edge international research – which is currently under construction at the GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt.

The underground double-ring facility has a circumference of 1.1 kilometres and comprises 14 adjoining research buildings. In future, ions will be accelerated here to near the speed of light in order, amongst other things, to investigate fundamental questions concerning the structure of the universe.

The exhibition illustrates the complexity of the planning and construction process – which has now spanned more than 18 years – through plans, texts and models, supplemented by photographs by Kirsten Bucher and Norbert Miguletz, who have been documenting the extraordinary scale of the construction site and its progress for years.

To accompany the exhibition, the book *Form Follows Beam* is being published by Park Books, offering further insights into this architectural project, which is as unusual as it is spectacular. The book will be launched for the first time as part of the exhibition. The opening will take place on Thursday, 3 September 2026, at 7 pm.
