Berlin International Congress Centre
The International Congress Centre Berlin is one of the city’s great architectural icons. The listed building has been out of use since 2014. In 2023, the Berlin House of Representatives resolved to revitalise the site and commissioned the Senate Department for Economic Affairs / Berliner Immobilienmanagement GmbH (BIM) to carry out a concept development process.
Arup Deutschland GmbH, Coloured Fields GmbH, GRAFT Gesellschaft von Architekten mbH, HOCHTIEF Infrastructure GmbH, the ICCA Project Group / Kunstforum Berliner Volksbank Foundation, KVL Projektmanagement Berlin GmbH, Max Dudler GmbH, MIB AG Immobilien und Beteiligungen and schneider+schumacher Planungsgesellschaft mbH, a project partnership comprising leading companies and experts from the fields of project development, urban planning, architecture, heritage conservation, arts and culture management, engineering and construction took part in the competition and, over a two-year dialogue phase, developed a concrete development concept as well as architectural and urban design proposals.
With the Berlin Senate’s official award recommendation of 23 June 2026 and the negotiations on an exclusivity agreement, the revitalisation is now a decisive step closer.
The aim of the project partnership is a careful yet forward-looking revitalisation of the ICC. The plan is to create a diverse mix of uses encompassing art, culture, concerts, exhibitions, catering, events, the creative industries and new ways of working. In future, the halls and foyers will once again serve as a stage for international events, cultural organisations and public programmes. In close partnership with the State of Berlin, solutions are to be developed for temporary alternative venues, anchor uses and long-term, sustainable models of use.
The ICC is gradually being developed into a neighbourhood that bustles with activity all day long. Additional new buildings at Messedamm 9 and 11, new entrances, improved access routes, attractive forecourts and a range of dining options are creating a new destination.
