New care and support centre in Waidhofen an der Ybbs

18.05.2026 - Notes

In the open competition for the new construction of the Waidhofen an der Ybbs Care and Support Centre, the design by schneider+schumacher Vienna received an honourable mention. The aim was to create a space offering a high quality of life for patients through a bright, welcoming and contemporary building. The design focuses on a sustainable, climate-resilient overall concept that integrates ecological energy and material cycles and responds to future climatic challenges.

The building opens up to the landscape, makes optimal use of daylight and creates a variety of visual connections through V-shaped recesses. A clearly defined entrance area and thoughtfully designed open spaces by 3:0 Landscape Architecture, featuring themed gardens – including sensory, edible and therapeutic gardens – promote orientation, relaxation and social interaction. Biodiversity and rainwater management are supported by green roofs, permeable surfaces and the ‘sponge city’ principle. Structurally, the building is based on a modular timber frame construction with a high degree of prefabrication, enabling rapid construction times, flexibility and a low carbon footprint.

The jury praised the design as an ambitious and bold urban planning approach. The stepped façade design of the care rooms was particularly well received, as it offers varied views and contributes to a high quality of stay.
