No ‘either/or’ on the Cultural Campus

Under the headline “New idea for Frankfurt’s cultural campus”, the FAZ reported at the end of February on a citizens’ initiative led by Martin Wentz, Frankfurt’s former head of urban planning. The initiative’s proposal – which is actually not a new idea – is to demolish the Juridicum, as this is the only way to create enough space south of Bockenheimer Landstraße for a single, contiguous building for the University of Music and Performing Arts (HfMDK). According to Martin Wentz, the current development plan “could easily be amended through a simplified procedure – especially as it will be several years before construction begins anyway”.
“If it’s that simple, then we should perhaps consider another, not quite so old idea that we published at schneider+schumacher in 2022,” says Prof. Astrid Wuttke, partner at schneider+schumacher, explaining: “With a minor amendment to the development plan, it would be possible to achieve both: a contiguous HfMDK and the continuation of the Juridicum building.”
