New housing in Frankfurt’s Gallus district

A new development comprising 42 social housing flats is being built at Herxheimerstraße 10 in Frankfurt’s Gallus district – designed by schneider+schumacher on behalf of ABG FRANKFURT HOLDING. The flats are being constructed on a plot of around 2,000 square metres, where an elevated bunker once stood.
The design envisages a long, narrow row of buildings whose form is inspired by the former bunker structure. The new development will comprise four full storeys, an additional penthouse level and a pitched roof housing the building services. The front-facing stairwells reinterpret the former stair tower.
Green views and private outdoor spaces take centre stage. The existing trees and green open spaces will be preserved. This means every flat will have its own little piece of nature: a private garden with a terrace on the ground floor, a sunny balcony on the upper floors, or a small but lovely roof terrace right at the top of the stepped-height floor.
The ground-breaking ceremony took place in December 2024; the flats are scheduled to be ready for occupancy by the end of 2027.
