LUMA – The Light Quarter
The official breaking ground ceremony in November 2024 marked the start of the ‘LUMA – The Light Quarter’ project in Graz-Reininghaus, an urban development area. The shell of the underground car park in this car-free neighbourhood is now finished, and the eight residential buildings currently under construction have reached third floor level. The project employs sustainable core-insulated brickwork. A total of 277 privately financed rental apartments and seven commercial spaces are scheduled for completion by the end of 2026.
schneider+schumacher Vienna designed eight residential buildings on behalf of ÖSW Österreichisches Siedlungswerk Gemeinnützige Wohnungs AG, conceived as individual blocks arranged around a central square. The ensemble offers a range of apartment sizes – from compact 39m2 1-bedroom apartments to spacious 93m2 4-bedroom apartments. By rotating the basic geometry, most apartments wrap around external corners, so there are no entirely north-facing apartments. Two of the buildings will also provide space for commercial facilities at ground level.
