On-site at FAIR

28.02.2023 - Notes

At the end of February, the TV news programme Tagesthemen broadcast a video report giving viewers a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the FAIR construction site. Dr Ingo Peter, head of PR at GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research, started by leading the ARD editor, Alex Jakubowski, through the main artery of the future particle accelerator – the underground ring tunnel arrangement with a diameter of nearly 1100m, in which particles will later be accelerated at almost the speed of light. Afterwards, they visited the above-ground section of the construction site where some 150,000m2 of gross floor space, and about 20 buildings are under construction, in which top international research will later take place. Project planning and on-site implementation is being carried out by the ion42 consortium, consisting of the architectural firms DGI Bauwerk and schneider+schumacher.

The photos taken by photographers Kirsten Bucher and Norbert Miguletz document the ever-changing perspectives of the gigantic construction site, including details. For several months now, they have been taking it in turns to capture how on-site construction work is evolving. The photos can be seen at www.ion42.de.
