World Architecture Festival Awards

05.07.2021 - Notes

At this year’s World Architecture Festival Awards, the Qianhai Telecommunication Center has won a prize in the Digital Technology category. The WAFX Award was presented to one project in each of twelve categories. The world’s first high-rise data centre is currently being built in Shenzhen, China. While it is common practice to build offices and flats high up, schneider+schumacher is applying this concept to data centres for the first time. Another special feature is the building’s kinetic façade. It will display the universal number Pi in its binary composition of 0 and 1. Thus, the façade picks up on the technical theme of the building, while at the same time creating a lively and interactive building elevation.

Prof. Michael Schumacher presented the design for the building together with Nan Wang, managing partner of schneider+schumacher’s Chinese office, as part of the three-day online event WAFutures. The WAFX Award was launched in 2017 and has since recognised the world’s most forward-thinking architectural concepts that address the key challenges that architects face in the future. The organiser has published an overview of this year’s twelve winners.
