Kinetic architecture

24.03.2021 - Notes

How do you present the topic of ‘kinetic architecture’ to the public? This challenge was probed in a seminar as part of a course on Building Construction and Design run by Prof. Michael Schumacher at Leibniz University in Hannover. The resulting project “Shadowstation”, created by students Brontë Schuetzenmeister, Aileen Stolze, Eduard Mica and Hussein Kelani, consists of seven sculptural objects which, driven by cogs, rotate two-and-a-half times a minute. When correctly synchronised, the word “new move” suddenly appears – the title of a new textbook written by Prof. Michael Schumacher, Michael-Marcus Vogt and Luis A. Cordón Krumme, who teach and carry out research together at the Institute for Design and Construction at Leibniz University Hannover. The book was published in 2020 by Birkhäuser Verlag. It covers contemporary kinetic architecture projects around the world.

The 220-page volume is available from bookshops (ISBN 978-3-0356-1353-7) or can be purchased direct from schneider+schumacher (pr@schneider-schumacher.de).
