Milestone reached on FAIR construction site

29.06.2021 - Notes

At the future accelerator centre FAIR, currently being built in international cooperation at GSI Helmholtzzentrum, another milestone has been reached: The ring tunnel system and the concreting of the last section of tunnel ceiling have now been completed. This means that structural work on the underground 1,100-meter-long ring accelerator tunnel is now complete. Planning and implementation of the construction project is being undertaken by the consortium ion42, consisting of the architectural firms DGI Bauwerk and schneider+schumacher.

The ring tunnel, which lies at a depth of around 18 metres, consists of two parallel sections. The particle accelerator will be installed in the outer of these two sections. Parallel to this are areas for technical supply facilities for the so-called SIS 100. With the completion of the entrance buildings, the excavation pit will be backfilled. Subsequently, technical equipment will start to be installed.
