Unloved modernity? Treppenstrasse in Kassel

09.05.2019 - Notes

The working group ‘Architects in the Preservation of Monuments and Building in Existing Contexts’ of the Chamber of Architects and Town Planners of Hessen continues its successful series “Unloved Modernity” in 2019. This year the city of Kassel in North Hessen has been chosen as their conference venue. The event is dedicated to a current controversial topic and a hitherto somewhat neglected aspect of building research – namely that of “public space” and “urban greenery” dating from the 1950s and 1960s.

The event aims to elucidate the qualities, peculiarities and typical design elements (spatial structure, formal language, materials, furnishing and plant varieties) of these public spaces and green areas. In addition it seeks to promote sensitisation and appreciation of such cultural garden heritage of the 1950s and 1960s, to formulate criteria for creating an inventory and conduct research, and to assure long-term preservation of a “post-war green modernity”.

The event will be chaired by Astrid Wuttke, a member of the management board at schneider+schumacher and Chair of the Hessen Chamber of Architects’ working group: ‘Architects in the Conservation of Monuments and Existing Buildings’.
